John Gunnin
John Gunnin has taught AP Art History and AP Studio Art at Corona del Mar High School and currently teaches art at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, California. He has served in the development of the AP Art History exam. He has also been a question leader in scoring the exam. In addition, he has served the College Board in a major revision of the AP Art History curriculum for its initial 2015 release. He was named the Orange County Arts Educator of the Year for 2007 and the Corona del Mar High School Teacher of the Year for 2009 and 2016. He has been a board member of Laguna Art Museum, Laguna College of Art and Design, Orange County Museum of Art, and the Witte lectures of Newport Beach Public Library.
Gunnin lives in Costa Mesa California with his wife and mini-schnauzer. He likes to surf, cook over wood fires, grow Italian heirloom broccoli, paint, and make ceramics.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
For the needs of new and beginning teachers, this AP Art and Design Institute will thoroughly cover the structure and requirement details of both sections of all three Exam Portfolios: 2D Design, 3D Design, and Drawing. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the most recent rubrics together with mock reading sessions using exemplary student work. We will view the most up-to-date presentations used to train readers, discuss scoring issues, and share insights on how best to help students succeed. As we review the current portfolio criteria, a special emphasis will be placed on the Sustained Investigation Section of each exam. Sketchbook/journal strategies together with developing essential inquiry questions will be reflected in our studio component. By the end of the session, participants will gain confidence in their ability to prepare students for the rigor of AP Art and Design Exam Portfolios.
