Shenita Brazelton is a licensed attorney and Senior Lecturer at Georgia State University located in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a BA from Tuskegee University in political science, a JD from Vanderbilt University Law School, and a PhD in political science from Georgia State University. She has taught U.S. Government and Politics for 12 years. She was a reader for the AP US Government and Politics Exam for several years and subsequently served as a table leader and question leader for the Exam. She has previously served as a member of the AP US Government and Politics Instructional Design Committee and Development Committee. As the former chair of the Social Sciences Academic Advisory Committee, she sat on the Academic Assembly Council where she provided advice to College Board senior management. She also served as an item writer for the College Board.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This workshop will focus on the structure of the AP US Government and Politics course as well as various course updates that became effective in Fall 2023. We will discuss a variety of pedagogical methods to teach the Big Ideas, Learning Objectives, and Essential Knowledge Statements for this course. Participants will gain a better understanding of how these concepts are utilized to build a cohesive course framework. We will also focus on the components of the AP exam. Particularly, we will cover five skills categories: Source Analysis, SCOTUS Application, Data Analysis, Concept Application, and Argumentation. We will also review and discuss multiple choice and free response questions on the AP exam.
