Chris Averill has been an Advanced Placement United States History Teacher for 35 years. He is a former AP US History Test Development Committee member for the College Board. Additionally, he has served in the capacity of Reader, Table Leader, Exam Leader and DBQ Question Leader at the Annual AP US History Readings up to and including the 2024 Reading. He was also instrumental in establishing the AP Teacher Best Practices Roundtable Evening at the annual AP US History Readings.
He has been endorsed by the College Board as an AP Consultant since 1999 and has taught numerous AP single-day workshops as well as Teaching and Learning Seminars. He has conducted APUSH week-long Summer Institutes in Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia and Connecticut over the past fifteen years. He has also conducted weeklong AP Achievement Academies in Florida and California. Additionally, he was a Faculty Consultant contributor for the 15th edition of the Alan Brinkley American History textbook and has recently been an educational reviewer for APUSH materials for Khan Academy, the 5th Edition - 2024 AMSCO AP US History Guide and the most recent edition of Fabric of a Nation. |

He was selected as the 2015 Chesterfield County Teacher of the Year, and the 2016 State of Virginia Region I Teacher of the year – one of 8 Finalists for Virginia Teacher of the Year.

APUSH APSI COURSE DESCRIPTION
I look forward to meeting you at the Marin By the Bay week long Institute. We have a full week of active learning activities which will hopefully be both entertaining and energizing. You will gain a deeper understanding of how to organize and develop a sequential curriculum for your AP Course that is both integrated and spiraling in skill development throughout the year. We will spend a considerable period of the week examining the AP Curriculum and creating student centered activities to address the historical thinking skills required. From “Change Over Time” to “Extended DBQ Analysis” activities that focus on development of historical thinking skills as well as content, we will comprehensively cover how to handle the curricular expectations. Additionally, we will examine the new exam in depth: Multiple Choice, Short-Answer Essay, Long-Answer Essay, and Document Based Questions. Time will also be allotted for Unit design, course pacing and syllabus creation for the new audit process. Helpful student activities will be presented that push your students to deepen their historical insights and that move them to a higher level of analytical writing in preparation for the AP Exam. Technology’s incorporation into the classroom will be exhibited and websites of strong value to the class will be explored in depth.

- AP Curriculum: Examination of the Historical Thinking Skills, Learning Objectives and Concept Outline.
- Collaboration Activity in breaking down the New AP Curriculum
- AP Exam: Basic structure, Percentages and Historical Thinking skills required – Impacts on how we teach
- Examination of Multiple Choice Section

- Multiple Choice Questions: Breaking down the questions and rationales, understanding their purpose and designing new questions – Techniques used to break down questions for further understanding
- Short Answer Essays: Examine released samples and hold a mock reading, create original short answers essays
- Websites examine historical websites for value to our curriculum
- Unit Design: Begin unit planning using Backward Design and Spiraling Techniques
- Long- Essays: Examine released samples and hold a mock reading using new scoring rubrics, create Long-essay questions
